Write your thoughts with context.

October 29, 2005

When you write a thought down to be read at some time in the future it is imperitive to include the context in which it was created. Why did you think of the idea? Was it something you heard on the radio? Who said it? Did you read something in the paper that made you think of it?

It could be a general statement or funny line that needs no explanation, but a lot of ideas require a context so you can add to that thought later. You must put yourself back in that original frame of mind. Sometimes when you return to an idea 3 or 4 weeks later to read it, it makes no sense at all. You might recall what point you wanted to make but if you don’t it is lost forever. Losing an idea is worse than losing your wallet or purse because they are potentially worth so much more and you have to believe that about your ideas. They are one of the most valuable things you possess.

A tip for the future, your future. Write it down.

October 25, 2005

If you’re serious about becoming who you really are then you need to write down your ideas, your dreams, your random thoughts, your jokes. At first, you’ll even want to write down the things you know are either too obvious or stupid, get them down and out of your head. Sometimes these ideas that you know aren’t quite right, will keep coming back to your mind distracting you. You must write it down to allow your mind to move on. You can come back to those ideas later and re-read them. They may even give you a new idea.

Try to carry a pen and pad where ever you go, to the grocery store, to the mall, on vacation. Your mind will never stop no matter where you are. Sometimes the most original thoughts come at the most unexpected times. Watch as the sticky notes, gum wrappers, scraps of paper, notebooks and journals pile up.

What’s that? You’re not a writer? Become one. If you can think, then you can write. Write now, edit later. (Watch for tips on how to organize your thoughts and make them work towards building who you want to become later). Your thinking is content and it may be more interesting than most of the thoughts that are already out there. So write it down now and find out who you really are.
